Definition and Examples of Performative Verbs In English grammar  and speech-act theory, a performative verb is a  verb  that explicitly conveys the kind of speech act being performed- such as  promise, invite, apologize, predict, vow, request, warn, insist,  and  forbid. Also known as speech-act verb or  performative utterance.   The concept of performative verbs  was introduced by Oxford philosopher J. L. Austin in  How to Do Things With Words  (1962) and further developed by American philosopher J.R. Searle, among others. Austin estimated that a good dictionary contains upwards of 10,000 performative or speech-act verbs. What is Holocaust Revisionism Essay The term â€Å"holocaust denier† is applied to those who prefer the terms â€Å"revisionism† or â€Å"revisionist. † Holocaust historians avoid using it to describe themselves and revise the aspects of the Holocaust. Holocaust historians in the revisionism belief that in Germany there was a breakout of typhus carried by lice and other diseases that spread throughout the camps and by having to treat camps with pesticide zyklon was the main reason there were causes of death. In that theory, it hadn’t anything to do with the extermination of the Jews nor was there even camps but were all evacuated or shut down which there wasn’t any evidence found. During the war the Jews were moved to Eastern Europe and were allegedly exterminated and not in Germany or Western Europe. Around 1940, the Germans were only one of the several involved in moving and the Soviets deported Jews out of Poland and entered to occupied West Germany. A Holocaust Revisionism Historian would have you believe there was no significant evidence of extermination. The claim of the legend is that there were no technical means provided for the specific task of extermination, and that means originally provided for the specific task of extermination, and that mean originally provided for other purposes did double duty in improvised arrangements† (The Journal of Historical Review, 2pp). Holocaust deniers ignore the evidence and insist that it was a myth. That it is because â€Å"Jews spread this myth as part of a grander plot intended to enable the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine, and now to gander continuing support for the state of Israel† (Lipstadt, pg. 27). Holocaust Historian Revisionism argues that evidence showed no proof of Hitler having signed a document ordering the Holocaust, documents were forged and language in the documents were completely misrepresented. Holocaust deniers make out uncertainty of exact number of deaths. They like to point out what is called the â€Å"other side of the issue† and make debate of an illegitimate historical fact. In the United States where it ensures freedom of speech and that it’s not against the law to make denial of the Holocaust, however countries such as Germany and France criminalize the denial of the Holocaust and have banned any Nazi publications. The assertions of Holocaust deniers play no role in genuine historical debates. Holocaust denial is really about anti-Semitism and irrational politics, not history or justice† (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2007). 2. A complete anti-Semitism statement made from writer Dan Gannon in an article published in 1994 entitled â€Å"Schindler’s List Exposed as Lies and Hate† which he makes a comment about the movie. â€Å"Commander Goeth shooting inmates from the front balcony of his house were complete fabrications and deliberate lies† (Gannon, 1994). In Gannon’s opinion the movie itself is fabricated for example, the camp is rebuilt and is surrounded on a steep hill and not visible where any outsiders can see any inmates. Commander Goeth is shooting working inmates in the camp. Therefore, the camp being visible through wire fences, commander Goeth couldn’t have shot inmates from the balcony as the house is at the bottom of a hill where you can’t see into the inmate’s camp. The camp’s location was next to a city called Cracow on a major highway and is visible from hundreds of houses in 3 surrounding villages. Most exchanges and conversations, and all events are based on the detailed recollections of Schindler Jews or Schindler himself and of other witnesses† (Keneally, 1982). Historical methods are facts that events can be proven by using evidence. The facts lead to analysis and interpretation. Revisionism is nothing more than an act of â€Å"revising† something that already exist or mostly applied to historical events. Revisionists investigate, analyze, and revise their conclusions based on facts or revise the facts based on their conclusion. They in other words, defend a conclusion whether or not the facts support it. Revisionists argue that the entire holocaust was a conspiracy theory because survivors lied, evidence by the Nazi’s was falsified, photographs and films were fraudulent. Revisionist stand on, if any survivor evidence can be shown to be wrong it should be dismissed. â€Å"History is the recorded narrative of past events, especially those concerning a particular period, nation, individual, etc. It recounts events with careful attention to their importance, their mutual relations, their causes and consequences, selecting and grouping events on the ground of their interest or importance† (Funk Wagnall, p. 599). Anti-Semitism criticizes Jews as a group and culture or hatred for the Jews as people. â€Å"Anti-Semites, however, progress over that critical step beyond dislike to pathology, hating Jews for being Jews† (Volknian, Watts, pg. 10). When the term â€Å"anti-Semitism† is casually used to silence those who are critical of the government of Israel and its policies. The revising of the Second World War is a work in progress by Russian and Germany or known as the Russo-Germany conspiracy that wants the world to know that the Holocaust is propaganda. However, Red Army propagandist blamed the German army for crimes committed by the Soviets. The murders of six million Jews have become a subject of topic from the Revisionist, modern revisionism dates back from the First World War during this time where every globe was affected. Allied propaganda phased in where its mastery showed the images of horrifying atrocities. The majority of the atrocities accredited to the Germans and their allies were admitted by the politicians and journalists who fabricated them to have been falsifies. Within a decade Western and European countries proclaimed that Germany and its allies did not bear guilt on starting the war. In the 1940’s, Jews and communist condemned and spoke out against the unconceivable crimes the Germans had done. The extermination of millions of Jews in the camps were reported that victims were steamed, baked, electrocuted, gassed, eaten away by quicklime, starved, shot, buried alive, mauled by wild beasts, subjected to sadistic experiments, and injected with lethal chemicals or germs. A number of these images were transmitted to American news agencies and in other countries, where it helped to inform the world of the horrors of Nazism. â€Å"It is this convergence of evidence, along with the documentary, scientific and photographic evidence, that is the most damming to the â€Å"revisionist† position† (The Holocaust History Project, 2006). Camps such as Treblinka, Belzec, Sobinor and Chelmno were indeed death camps for the purpose to murder Jews. Only about 7 Jews survived the Belzec extermination camp and 550, 000 were killed as it was also Himmler’s plan of action. There was â€Å"selection† process of which Jews would be murdered and which would work and then be murdered. SS doctors would inspect Jewish inmates as to where they’ll be able to work. 4. Zyklon B was the help of the extermination, although used to exterminate pests but preferably to exterminate Jews. Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel and survivor of the Holocaust has also been the founding Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council since the 1980’s, a tribute to Holocaust survivors. A professor at Boston University for much of his life has worked on behalf of oppressed people and defender of peace and human rights all over the world. Wiesel has been attacked on his views of what he witnessed in Holocaust camps as â€Å"holocaust deniers† claim that Wiesel and the Jewish Organization would assisnate those who tell the truth about the holocaust hoax and that their lies would be exposed. Wiesel is considered by â€Å"holocaust deniers† as a false witness who has told propaganda lies. Wiesel describes what he witnessed at Auschwitz of burning flames in a ditch were victims bodies were found. In Buchenwald, 10,000 persons were sent to their deaths each day. â€Å"Ellie Wiesel passes for one of the most celebrated eyewitnesses to the alleged Holocaust. Yet in his supposedly autobiographical book Night, he makes no mention of gas chambers. He claims to have witnessed Jews being burned alive, a story dismissed by all historians. Wiesel gives credence to the most absurd stories of other eyewitnesses. He spreads fantastic tales of 10,000 persons sent to their deaths each day in Buchenwald† (Faurisson, 2005). In Night, Wiesel describes his experiences and emotions of the oppression of the Nazis and the roundups of his family and neighbors in the Romanian town of Sighet where people were deported in cattle cars to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Between 1940 – 1945, Wiesel and his family were deported by the Nazis to Auswitz when he was age 15. His mother and younger sister were the first to vanish without a trace, he, his two older sisters, and father were transported to Buchenwald where his father died. Wiesel talks about the mental and physical anguish that he and his fellow prisoners experienced and the death march from Auswitz Birkenaw to the concentration camp at Buchenwald. In 1958, he wrote the book Night which has been translated in 30 languages and sold millions of copies. 5. Auschwitz has come to symbolize the greatest crime in human history† (Rudolf, Pg. 3). Yet the greatest and bloodiest genocide in which tens of millions were murdered or imprisoned. As the Russo-Germany preparation began in the 1920’s have unleashed genocide and annihilated Eastern Europeans from the 1930’s and into the 1940’s. Germany did not act alone in the Second World War as they jointed with the Soviets to invade Poland in 1939. Two countries that were neutral in history. Although, some sources says the Nazis hatred for the Catholic church had executed many clergymen in Poland and other establishments. Revisions evidence would suggest that the amount of six million bodies would provide tons upon tons of ashes and there is no evidence of any large depositories of ashes. However, some sources would disagree that the bodies were incinerated and some were burned in mass graves and had been exhumed. The ashes had been dumped in fields and rivers, and surprisingly the means to be used as good fertilizer by Auschwitz farmers in their fields. Some sources range that there were about 300,000 to 500,000 or more than 3,000,000. In Auschwitz the proximity is 1. 3 million victims and in Treblinka about 800,000 victims. â€Å"The only evidence is the postwar testimony of individual â€Å"saviors. † This testimony is contradictory, and no â€Å"survivor† claims to have actually witnessed any gassing. There is no contemporaneous documents and no hard evidence whatsoever: no means of ashes, no crematoria capable of disposing of millions of corpses, no pile of clothes, no human soap, no lamp shades made of human skin, no records, no credible demographic statistics† (Zundel, pg. 7). 6. The Fifth Element, Sinfield, The Perfect Storm and A River Runs Through It Authors examine many different sources to become better writers. By drawing on the writings of another author one can enhance their current writing style and also learn new ways to write. The plot, conflict throughout the story and the relationships between the characters are some examples of the parts of a story that an author can look at. Plot is the essence of a story. It is basically an outline of the flow of a story from one event to another. By examining the plot of a work, one can gain insight into another person's style of storytelling and from that style one can then learn ways to enhance his own writing. The movie, The Fifth Element, contains a plot that unravels very creatively. The screenwriter of the movie chose to tell his story from a future time when humans and aliens coexist. His goal is to explain to the moviegoer the idea that four elements, portrayed as rocks, make up life and one essential element holds these four together to create life and combat evil. He begins his explanation through a flashback sequence that displays the initial conflict, an ultimate evil, which will again arise later in the movie. After the flashback, the movie follows a chronological chain of events. The audience is introduced to the main characters, a man and a woman, and then to the rest of the good guys and the villains. T hroughout the course of the movie the characters move through many emotions from fear to hate to sheer joy. In the end, the good guys gather the four elements and are able to combine them together with the essential element, love, to destroy the evil. The creator’s use of common elements such as flashbacks, conflict and the basic concepts of good and evil can be drawn upon to better ones own plot construction. The Fifth Element uses the concept of a tangible evil as the major source of conflict. Sebastian Junger's book The Perfect Storm uses the natural phenomena of a storm as its ultimate conflict. The book takes place on a commercial fishing boat, the Andrea Gail, which gets stuck at sea during a terrible storm. The crew of the boat has to fight the storm in order to save their own lives. This causes a man verses nature conflict in which the man has little chance of winning.

One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest: the Power of Laughter Essay

Jimmy Buffet once said â€Å"If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane. † When an individual is no longer capable of laughing, he is also no longer capable of being in control of himself. This happens when a greater authority has the power to deny a person of their laughter; which, inevitably, denies him of his freedom. Ken Kesey conveys the idea that laughter and freedom go hand in hand throughout his novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Kesey portrays laughter as a parallel to freedom through various literary symbols and imagery in order to illustrate how the power of laughter can free a man who is under the control of an unjust authority. Through the characterization of Nurse Ratched and McMurphy, Kesey illustrates how the manipulation of others and the challenge of authority is a key component in the ability to laugh. Through the characterization of Nurse Ratched, Kesey illustrates how one person can manipulate others for her own specific intentions. Throughout the story, it is clear that Nurse Ratched (Bug Nurse) manipulates the patients and faculty to control them so she has all the power. As the book starts, we are immediately brought into this mental ward in the eyes of Chief Bromden. As he walks down the hall, and the aids insult him because he is dumb and deaf. However, little do they know that Chief is the exact opposite. As they continue to speak as if he weren’t there and hand him the broom, â€Å"They laugh†¦[it is a] Hum of black machinery, humming the hate and death and other hospital secrets† (10). The laughter of the black aids is not clear and freeflowing like laughter should be. Instead, it is described as a â€Å"hum† which illustrates that even the aids do not have the freedom to laugh. They are â€Å"black machinery† or descendents of the combine which demonstrates that the faculty on this ward is under the control of Nurse Ratched and the combine. It is also evident that they are all working together because when machines are working correctly, they hum in synchronization, just like these men are doing with their empty laughter. Along with the machine-like laughs, the men also know what is going on in the ward because chief implies that their humming contains all of the mysteries. Kesey uses machine-like references and imagery in order to illustrate Nurse Ratched’s influence on her employee’s; she is the reason there is no laughter on the ward. Another cene that expresses Big Nurses power is when Chief is describing how Big Nurse hates when things are out of order. Chief explains that even her uniform has to be crisp and clean at all times, and when its not, she still smiles and pretends not to care, but inside it bothers her to no extent. He makes it clear that he sees, â€Å"her sit in the center of this web of wires like a watchful robot, tend her network with mechanical insect skill, know every second which wire runs where and just what current to send up to get the results she wants† (30). Big Nurse is portrayed as a mechanical spider who has the knowledge and ability to control whatever is in her â€Å"web. † Kesey references her as machine-like figure due to her constant necessity to be in control. Everything she does must be in a certain order and flow a certain way. When Chief says she knows how to â€Å"get the results she wants† it makes it clear that she is able to manipulate everyone. This demonstrates that her manipulation takes away all of the patients power to do anything; it even takes away their freedom and laughter. Another example that portrays this idea is in the article Salvation Through Laugher. The author, Stephen L. Tanner, is analyzing Kesey’s work, and as he discusses the first chapter of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, he notes how, â€Å"Miss Ratched is pleased when a ‘completed product’ goes back into society as a ‘functioning, adjusted component'† (Tanner 57). Tanner’s analysis expresses how Big Nurses intentions are to create these robots that do not have the ability to think for themselves. A â€Å"completed product† or success, will be think and act like the faculty, just another part of the machine. The pleasure Nurse Ratched gets out of these success’ illustrates that she loves gaining power and taking away people’s freedoms. Nurse Ratched manipulates the men on the ward and the faculty in order to gain power and take away all of their freedoms, even their freedom to laugh. Kesey conveys that the challenge of authority is the key to finding true identity. The protagonist, McMurphy immediately is introduced as this man with a huge, impenetrable ego. From the moment he steps on the ward, Chief notices that he’s different. Upon McMurphys arrival, Chief is awakening from the fog he is in. He’s in the day room with his inmates and is listening in on their conversations. Suddenly he hears Nurse Ratched announce that there is a new arrival. McMurphy enters the ward and is laughing. Chief notes that, â€Å".. it’s free and loud†¦[it] sounds real†¦it’s the first [real] laugh I’ve heard in years† (16). This illustrates how McMurphy, even from the beginning, has the intentions to challenge the rules. Before him, no one laughed on the ward, or even spoke above an indoor voice. However, as soon as he arrives, his laughter is â€Å"loud and free† which demonstrates that he is boisterous and independent. The combine will not succeed in taking away his freedom, nor will Nurse Ratched take away his ability to laugh. A second example is the scene in which McMurphy and his inmates disregard Big Nurses orders that they cannot watch the world series and watch it anyway because they had the majority in the second vote. As they all stop cleaning and sit down in front a blank TV screen, Nurse Ratched’s anger builds. Finally, she loses it and screams at McMurphy that he is , â€Å"‘supposed to be working during these hours! ‘ Her voice†¦a tight whine†¦a saw ripping through pine† (127) â€Å"her voice sounds like it hit a nail†(128). McMurphy’s breaking of the rules and influence on his inmates drives Nurse Ratched to the edge. Her voice hitting â€Å"a nail† illustrates authority running into a large bump and stopping it right in its tracks. The whining in her voice demonstrates that McMurphy is frustrating her, he is testing her power and this worries her, because she does not want to lose her power, and McMurphy is threatening her. However, no matter what Nurse Ratched does, she cannot seem to stop McMurphy and his free laugh. One of the most vital scenes is when McMurphy breaks the glass in the nurses station just after Cheswick commits suicide. He walks up to the nurse’s station, â€Å"†¦as big as a house! †¦[and says] in his slowest , deepest drawl how he figured he could use one of the smokes he bought†¦then he ran his hand through the glass†¦[it came] apart like water splashing†(172). McMurphy, haven been gone for a short while, challenges Big Nurses power and shows her that he’s back and is not losing this war. Him being â€Å"as big as a house† gives a visual that his power is radiating off of him. When he asks for his cigarettes, its in a slow and deep voice, and he does not wait for a response, just runs â€Å"his hand through the glass† it illustrates that he is not asking permission for anything. He will go against all of her rules because she cannot control him. The imagery Kesey uses to illustrate the glass shattering because when water splashes, there are many droplets and its not just one massive drop. McMurphy did not just break the glass or scratch Big Nurses power, he shattered it. He made his point that he has the power, not her, and he will always be free. Throughout the story, Kesey continues to have McMurphy constantly breaking the rules and challenging conformity in order to put across the idea that challenging authority can bring individuality. Ken Kesey, the author of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, conveys the idea that laughter and freedom go hand in hand when it comes to a person being an individual. Through the characterization of Nurse Ratched and McMurphy, Kesey suggests that manipulating others and challenging authority is an essential part of laughing and freedom. I have come to learn that freedom can be achieved by laughing and it’s a necessity to laugh, therefore it’s a necessity to be free. After reading this novel, it is clear that laughter is crucial part of individuality and without it, we would all be mechanical robots because as Kesey once said â€Å"if you lose your laugh, you lose your footing. â€Å"

Belonging Essay

The poems by Steven Herrick ‘Caitlin and Mopping’ and ‘The Picnic’ written in 2000 and the novel by Amy Tan ‘The Joy Luck Club’ written in 1989. Through figurative language and poetic techniques the composers represent the sense and connection of belonging in narrative and poetic form. ‘Caitlin and mopping’ is a poem written by Steven Herrick in 2000. It is based on the compelling story of 16 year old boy named Billy, who trades the soulless tyranny of his father’s home and the tediousness of high school for a life of no fixed address. The purpose of the poem is to tell the reader the first time Billy meets Caitlin who is an employee, mopping the floors. They have daily chats, become great friends, which eventually turns into a relationship. Billy and Caitlin have this amazing connection, even though they come from two different worlds. They become very faithful with each other. The persona chooses to tell his story through direct speech and structural techniques. Steven Herrick uses poetic techniques, direct speech and relationships to help convey the understanding of integration in this poem. To prove so, when Billy steals leftover food in McDonalds, he opens up the oppurtunity to belong to Caitlin. When Caitlin observes Billy ‘stealing scraps’ she is drawn to the way Billy looks ‘self contained’. His demeanour is what encourages her not to call the Manager. Instead Caitlin ‘smiled at him. I smiled at him and said, â€Å"I hate mopping. †/ he sat in his chair/ and smiled back/ and i felt good/ that i hadn’t called the Manager. ’ Herrick uses the direct speech in this extract to demonstrate the potential for belonging etween Caitlin and Billy. She does the unexpected and puts him at ease and the motif of their smiles further emphasizes a connection between the two. This poem shows the significant moment of when Billy and Caitlin first met and the connection between the two will be stronger in time and shape our understanding of the two characters belonging to each other. ‘The picnic’ is a poem written by Ste ven Herrick in 2000. The poem is about Caitlin and Billy having a picnic together and showing their affection and devotion towards each other. The purpose of this poem is to show the growing sense of union and connection that builds between the two characters through stages of events. Herrick uses poetic techniques and relationships between characters to help convey the understanding of acceptance between the two characters. To prove so, Caitlin and Billy have a picnic together by the Bendarat River. The rhythm and pace of ‘The picnic’ is slow and calm. Herrick uses repitition – ‘We ate everything/ We took our time†¦ / It was warm,/ it was delicious†¦ – and a steady beat throughout this verse to illustrate that the way in which Caitlin and Billy come to feel a sense of belonging to each other is unhurried and easy. The use of personification ‘and the beer worked its magic’ attributes the human characteristics to inanimate the object, which in this case helped convey that the significant moment was working through ‘magic’. The enjambment in the final part o f the verse – ‘and we slept together/ only/ we really did just/ sleep together/ content/ to waste the hours/ close. – also places emphasis on the feelings of comfort and closeness that each provides for the other. This poem relates to ‘Caitlin and mopping’ with similar uses of techniques such as poetic techniques. This poem links to the significance of moments because this it is in actual fact about a significant moment where the two characters have a moment together which help shape their sense of belonging together through time. Both poems use the technique language modes. Herrick combines the modes of narrative and poetry to represent the concept of belonging. By combining these two modes of representation, Herrick is able to explore the many dimensions of belonging. The narrative mode helps him represent the process or stages of belonging quite clearly as his verse novel follows the conventions of plot. Each chapter moves the events of the story as a whole forward and we are able to see the ways in which his key characters begin to feel they belong together By using the mode of poetry as well in his text, Herrick is able to represent the emotions of his characters very economically and powerfully. This The novel ‘The joy luck club’ by Amy Tan is written in 1989. The story is about death of Suyuan Woo, an elderly Chinese woman and the founding member of the Joy Luck Club. Suyuan has died without fulfilling her â€Å"long-cherished wish†: to be reunited with her twin daughters who were lost in China. Suyuan’s American-born daughter, Jing-mei (June) Woo, is asked to replace her mother at the Joy Luck Club’s meetings. She soon realises the distance between herself and her daughters and makes an effort to get closer and create an affiliation bond. Amy Tan uses many techniques such as figurative language and flash backs to help convey the idea of belonging. Shown through each chapter, concepts of belonging are shown within events. In the chapter ‘Feathers from a Thousand Li Away’ In ‘scar’, An-mei’s mother ‘cut a piece of meat from her arm’ showing the daughter’s devotion to her mother, and sense of belonging to her. ‘This is how a daughter honors her mother’, comments An-mei. In ‘The Red Candle’ Lindo’s moving to her future mother-in-law’s house ends her sense of real belonging with her own family. ‘I missed my family and my stomach felt bad, knowing i had finally arrived where my life said i belonged’. This use of ‘belonged’ is ironic, however, since it is Chinese tradition which says Lindo belonged there, not her own feelings. Figures of speech such as similies and metaphors are used throughout to enrich the imagery of belonging. Similes are frequently used: ‘my mother loved to show me off, like one of my many trophies she polished’. The simile shows that Waverly felt her mother had made her into an object from which to gain status, a perception which impaired for many years her sense of belonging with her mother. Metaphors often help enhance a character’s erception about belonging, as Waverly’s later epiphany about her mother: ‘I could finally see†¦ an old woman, a wok for her armor, a knitting needle for her sword’. The metaphors of the wok and the knitting needle show Waverly’s realisation that Lindo is not threatning, and help her to regain a sense of belonging with her mother. Flashback is used in every story an d helps the reader to understand the sense of belonging or not belonging of the characters. The flash backs help us understand the characters by revealing aspects of their past. The Joy Luck Club’ relates to the two poems from ‘The Simple Gift’ because they are all similar with techniques (such as figurative language) and understanding of belonging and acceptance within the texts. The quotes, techniques and examples above emphasize that siginificant moments in life shape our identity and individuality of integration in time. It has been proven that the poet and author of the two texts have used developed structures, poetic techniques and structural techniques. The examples have proven that both, novels and poems, use significant moments in time to shape our understanding of belonging.

People look at pictures and tend to mimic what they see. Nowadays, advertisements depict women in a passive/submissive, almost childlike manner. This implies that women are subdued, that they need to be controlled and dominated. Or that they are not beautiful unless they resemble the models. In other words, fat, short, stubby, too tall, too skinny, different ethnicity is not attractive. Entering into adolescence can be one of the most stressful times in ones lifetime. This is a time when they begin to discover who they are. They are becoming more independent and are establishing friendships. Venturing into the teenage years can be a very emotional, stressful, confusing time. By no means is it easier for males than females, though females tend to be bombarded with perfection imagery more so than males. Some make the change from childhood into adolescence with only a few minor problems, others however, may have a more difficult time handling the pressures and some look to our culture as an example. Many fear the weight that is gained during this time is permanent, will panic, and desperately try to take the weight off. Our culture portrays this excess weight as unattractive and in some cases, disgusting, leading to low self-esteem. They are not aware that once the physical changes during this time cease, their weight will usually stable off and will maintain their b odys natural set point. Once they start losing weight, they feel better, as if they are conforming to societys set pattern. Complements and acceptance once not received can fuel the drive to look like the face in the magazine. Teenagers are under a lot of pressure to succeed and fit in. Writing Sentences for Beginners Here are four types of sentences to begin writing in English. Follow the example in each type of sentence. Learn these symbols to understand each type of sentence. These symbols represent parts of speech in English. Parts of speech are the different types of words in English. Key to Symbols S subject   Subjects include I / you / he / she / it / we / they and names of people: Mark, Mary, Tom, etc. or types of people: children, students, parents, teachers, etc. V verb   Simple sentences use the verb ‘be’ such as: I am a teacher. / They are funny. Verbs also tell us what we do:   play / eat / drive etc. or what we think: believe / hope / want etc. N noun   Nouns are objects such as books, chair, picture, computer, etc.  Nouns have singular and plural forms:  book - books, child - children, car - cars, etc. Adj   Adjective Adjectives tell how someone or something is. For example:  big, small, tall, interesting, etc.   Prep P   Prepositional phrase Prepositional phrases tell us where someone or something is. Prepositional phrases are often three words and begin with a preposition: For example:  in the house, at the store, on the wall, etc. ()   Parentheses If you see something in parentheses () you can use the type of word, or leave it out. Start off Easy: Sentences with Nouns Here is the first type of easy sentence. Use the verb to be. If you have one object, use a or an before the object.
