Review of Leadership in Crisis: Ernest Shackleton and the Epic Voyage of the Endurance† Oluwatosin Oladosu MGT 619 – Strategic Management and Leadership March 23, 2017 The case study Leadership in Crisis: Ernest Shackleton and the Epic Voyage of the Endurance is an interesting story which has been advantageous to a lot of managers and companies teaching about leadership and management. Shackleton performed different roles which could be related to what is happening today in organizations. He raised funds for the Endurance expeditions during their exploration of the Antarctic, interviewed and hired his crew members and showed great leadership spirit in the face of various problems faced. The review of the case study attempts to answer†¦show more content†¦Additionally, his desire to earn fame and bring glory to England highlights the imperial opportunity by Shackleton and his team as he was so eager to go on his own personal voyage and for people to see him as a hero, that he turned deaf ears to the warning to postpone the trip because the weather was bad. The Endurance expedition should also be analyzed as an entrepreneurial venture because Shackleton exhibits various attributes of an entrepreneur which relates to funding. He approached fund-raising with the creativity and verve of a determined entrepreneur. Shackleton spent a lot of time trying to secure funding for his expedition despite public and private investors being skeptical of all kinds of private ventures. Even some of Shackleton’s friends considered the mission too dangerous and declined to support it financially. He also faced a major obstacle as he had developed a reputation for being weak physically. Shackleton being a true entrepreneur did not give up in the face of the different obstacles. He made friends with members of the press who helped promote his journey to re- establish the prestige in Great Britain. Additionally, through his wife’s help, he created lists of wealthy donors whom he sent personal letters to and a copy of an expedition prospectus he had commissioned.
